Significant brain similarities between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia have been found in a new study by researchers at the RCSI and Beaumont Hospital.
For the first time, researchers found how the process that controls how information is transmitted from neuron to neuron in the brain is altered in both conditions.
The study was the first to look at sub-regions in the hippocampus. Abnormalities in the hippocampus are among the most consistent findings in schizophrenia research and are also associated with bipolar disorder.
